Potatoes are a staple in almost every kitchen. The main reasons being they are versatile, delicious, cost-effective, and very satisfying. Potatoes are rich in several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, and folate. There are many different types of potatoes, each with its own textures, usage, and nutritional properties. Here are the 4 main kinds of potatoes and some unique ways to enjoy these root vegetables.

Russet Potatoes – These dry and starchy potatoes are typically see used in mashed or baked potatoes. However, they can be the main event at dinner when you make a flavor-rich potato curry. Twice-baked potatoes with broccoli and cheese are also an excellent use for hearty russet potatoes.

Sweet Potatoes – Think beyond thanksgiving type sweet potatoes and discover their savory side. They pair well with cumin and chipotle spices. An oven-baked sweet potato tastes great when topped with pulled pork or shredded barbecued chicken. The flesh of a cooked sweet potato can be mashed and added to baked goods like muffins, breads, and cakes.

Golden Potatoes – These distinctly thin-skinned and yellow-fleshed potatoes are remarkably creamy. Most recipes that call for golden potatoes encourage leaving the skin on for cooking. They are ideal for oven roasting, baked dishes, and seafood chowders.

Red Potatoes – The thin red skin and white flesh of these spuds make them perfect for cooking with the skin on. They boil nicely and pan-fry to perfection. The added color makes them a flavorful compliment to a green salad or a wise choice for potato salad.
